Adjusted Gross Income

Adjusted gross income (AGI) is an individual’s total income minus allowable adjustments for US federal income tax.

In this definition

How AGI is calculated

Start with total income and subtract allowable adjustments to income. The IRS lists these adjustments in Part II of Schedule 1 (Form 1040).

AGI, taxable income and MAGI

AGI is not the same as taxable income or take-home pay. Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) also differs from AGI, and its definition depends on the tax provision being applied.

Keep the supporting records

Keep those records available when preparing a return. Eligibility depends on the applicable rules; an expense is not automatically an allowable adjustment.

US federal tax reference

See the IRS definition of adjusted gross income. This entry explains the term and does not calculate a tax liability.
